So - Crafting

Since ancient times the Japanese, using close-to-home materials such as straw, bamboo, wood and paper, have put their hearts and minds to devising and creating a variety of tools. These tools were born in large part from adapting to life in a climate consisting of the four seasons and one with many natural weather phenomena. The types of tools created were specific to the tasks and activities demanded of the people.

The ancient Japanese believed that 8 million gods lived in the trees and grasses of nature and that the souls of people and of gods lived within the tools. They also believed that tools carried the souls of those who used them and family tools used by all carried the gods themselves within it. The culture of treating things with care, that is now slowly dying, originated from this belief and respect for quality. It can be seen in the simple forms and the beautiful functionality of Japanese tools that have been made with this tradition.
