Shu - Interests

Historically Japan is a culture that deeply appreciates the natural world - as seen through the expressive transitions of the four seasons. The Japanese learned to enjoy the beauty and fragility of nature seen in the moment - the transience of colour in the fields and mountains, the slight scent that the swaying wind brings, the trickling sound of melting snow, the change of autumn leaves to fallen leaves, the waxing and waning of the moon - which is directly connected to the enjoyment of life.

This is still the fundamental basis of the Japanese in leisure and sightseeing (tourism) in the modern day. The well known unique values of "wabi-sabi", where like the ever-changing seasons, humans are also a part of the natural course in nature. And the ideology of zen, to experience this flow of life with all of the five senses relates deeply to the Japanese way of thinking.
